Why Photographing Cook Islanders Returning home to Marry is So Special.
Teariki grew up with the ocean at his doorstep, the scent of frangipani in the air, and the kind of childhood where everyone knew everyone.
Like so many Cook Islanders, life eventually took him beyond the reef—to Australia, where he built a new life, found new opportunities, and met the woman who would become his wife. Beautiful Kate. Now, on his wedding day, he’s back. As a photographer, I get to witness these homecomings all the time—Cook Islanders returning with their partners to say I do in the place that shaped them. And honestly, it’s one of the best parts of what I do. When Cook Islanders return to marry, it’s not just about the wedding—it’s about sharing their homeland with the person they love. And the love on a wedding day stretches far beyond just two people. The traditions, the warmth of family—it all comes together in a way that makes every wedding here feel deeply personal, And that’s why I love capturing these moments.
